Fistula comes in different shapes and sizes. It affects a wide variety of organs starting from the brain to the anus. Also the complexity and the amount of severity varies from case to case. Just simply by looking at the symptoms no body can tell for certain whether the person is suffering from fistula.

Symptoms vary from place to place depending on the place of attack. This is why you need to undergo a lab test in order to diagnose correctly whether you are actually suffering from fistula or not.

Different Diagnosis Methods Include
1.Radiation Test: In this type of lab test the patient needs to swallow a radio opaque dye. Then a x-ray of the person concerned is taken. This x-ray will properly show whether you are having a fistula growth or not. If the fistula involves the colon, a contrast enema, where the contrast dye is given via the rectum, may be useful.

2. Ct scan also come in handy in the determination of an abscess or other forms of pockets of infection

3. Fistulogram: It’s a program in which radio-opaque dye is injected into the opening of the skin of an enterocutaneous fistula and X-rays taken, is often performed as well.

however there are certain kind of fistula for which the above doesn't help. When there is a fistula generation between the arteries and the veins then the following process needs to be undertaken

• Radiograph of the chest
• CT scan to confirm the presence of the abnormal blood vessels.
• Pulmonary arteriogram (motion picture x-rays taken after the injection of dye) which is used to make a "road map" of the abnormal blood vessels before surgery or other treatments.
